Type Specimen Book
Introduction
Project Scope
In this project, I designed and produced a 46-page specimen book for the typeface Base 900, a contemporay redesign of the influential bitmapped type family "Base 9" from Emigre type. The book explores and contextualizes the typeface's design style, its cultural impact on history, and the trends in society and culture it inspired. It functions as a biographical and visual reference point to immerse readers in Emigre and designer Zuzana Licko's vision for the future of design.
Year: 2025
Development Time: 3 weeks
Deliverables:
- Printed & Bound 46 page book
Research & Sketches
Beginning my research, I compiled sketches of the typeface's creation, photos of the designer, their life story, and any other related visual content I could find.

With such a daunting project ahead of me, I outlined the structure of the book, potential page layouts, and overarching thematic through lines to give the book and story of the typeface a sense of cohesion which related to the typeface's origins.

Preliminary Page Designs
Earliest spread layouts, initially created as a proof of concept on the design style and tone of the book used for peer critiques. Study of typeface choices, color, composition & overall thematic cohesion.

Final Page Designs
After several rounds of peer and professional critique, I consolidated the feedback to produce these final page spreads.
